I Aims of this Course
The course is designed as a guide to understanding and appreciating the richness of Western literature, including their major writers and masterpieces. Students need to pick up some of the important writers and try to translate their works into Chinese. There are numerous Chinese translations of these literatures. Students also need to familiarize themselves with these translations and sometimes make a comparison between different translation editions. It is hoped that after studying of this course students will better control the bilingual sources of Western literature and be ready to do further researches.
II Textbook
An Introduction to Western Literature edited by Gong-way Lee
Some handouts will be distributed to the students
III Teaching Methods
Lectures. Classroom translation. Analysis of the translated works. Group discussions. Quizzes.
IV Grading
Mid-term 30%, Final 30%, Classroom performances, homeworks and others, 40%

Week 1
An Introduction to the course. Survey of Western literature. Categories of literature. Reading Allegory, Caricature, drama, epic, epigram, epitaph, essay, and history.
Week 2
Introducing important textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedia and magazines related to Western literature. Reading Nobel Prize, Poet Laureate, and Rhetoric. Assignments.
Week 3
Reading Sagas, Theater, Opera, and Children’s Literature. Assignments. Quiz.
Week 4
Reading Irish Literature, Italian Literature, Edmund Burke, and Russian Literature. Assignments.
Week 5
Reading Latin Literature and Language, Boccacio, Dumas Family, and French Literature. Assignments. Quiz.
Week 6
Reading Greek Literature and German Literature. Assignments.
Week 7
Reading Scandinavian Literature and Spanish Literature. Assignments. Quiz.
Week 8
Reading The Legacy of the Nineteenth Century, Main Currents of the Twentie
