It is one of these kinases that determines when DNA replication initiates and when a cell divides. Two groups now report the identification of the CDK targets essential to DNA replication as the proteins Sld2 and Sld3. This work was carried out in yeast, but it is likely that a similar system is conserved in the higher eukaryotes. This finding opens a new window on the molecular mechanism of DNA replication and the possible control of cell proliferation as cancer chemotherapy.
