ABSTRACT． Thefacile solid-liquid phase transfer catalyzed—M ichael addition of ethyl Ⅱ一
(p—toIy1suIfony1)acetae to a，日一unsaturatde esters is reported．Ef~ectsoftheeatalyst．the
M ichaeJreceptorand solvent on the conjugate addition arebriefly discussed．Thesulfur-
containing carbanion wasgenerated from a—arylsulfonylaeetate (1)with potassium carbonate
underPTC conditionsand then allowedtoreact sftuwiththeⅡ．8一unsaturat叫 estersat也e
tempcraturcsof 30～40℃ ．TheM ichael addition ofcarbanion (2) to theacrylates (3。 4)．
a-alkylacrylates (5-- 8)， itaoc nates (9， 10)，crotonate (11)，andmaieate (12)proceeded
smoothly．Eightsubstituted pentanedioic acid esters (13～ 16， 21． 22)．such as l-ethyl一5．
butyl一?一(p-tolylsulfony1)glutarate (14)， and twosubstitutedhexan=：dioicacidesters(19． 20)．
such asdiethyl 2-(p—tojy1sulfony1)一4一ethoxycarbony1^dipate (19)． havebeen synthesized in

rioussubstituted hexanedioieacid esters and pentanedioic acid esters．Som e ofthe Ⅱ一arylsul—
f0ny1glut8ratsmightserveasthe1ntermediatesforpreparingsubstituted glutaconates which
are synthetically useful，and usually difficultto obtain．
