Abstract Reading widely is all effective way of fostering students’human and literary accomplishment．In 2001．“The criteria of Chinese Curriculum”was issued．In it the amount of the total reading in the period of compulsive education stage，and also in the teaching suggestion section：to develop the students’reading interest；to enlarge their reading；tO limit their exercises；to read good books；tu rerad books as many as possible and to try to finish reading a whole book．All these above show that the reformers of the curriculum value the importance of reading，But in the actual teaching work in middle schools almost no one pay attention to the students’reading after class，SO the author of this thesis try to solve the problem through this research．It is also the urgent requirement in the reform ofthe Chinese teaching in the new stage． After the investigation in the District of Ban An，Shen Zhen，the author finds that in the developed region the students’extra-curricular reading has the following features：the attitude in reading is active；the reading materials are comparatively enough，but the effect is not SO satisfactory,11le glaring problems are as follows：1．The reading is in the way of entertainment．2．The strategy of reading is scarce．3．Students have not enough reading time。 4．They carl not use the reading materials effectively．5．Almost no reading happens in the family． There are many other factors that affect the students’extra-currieular reading，such aS the development of economy and culture，people’s attitude towards talents，the atmosphere of the cultural construction，the marketing of books，the criteria of the national curriculum，the management of school，the instruction of teachers in school and family education，ete．All these things mentioned above have direct or indirect effect on the students’reading after class． If we really want to change the situation we must combine all the strength to deal with the problems．So the author of this thesis bases her research on the abov
