A Survey of Metacognitive Strategies Employed
by the Rural Junior High School Students
in English Vocabulary Learning

Abstract
In July 2001,State Ministry of Education issued The New English Curriculum
Requirements fo,.Chinese Primary Schools and JuniorZSenior Schools,which states
explicitly that one of the teaching objectives is to cultivate the learning strategy,including
the vocabulary learning strategy.However,the author has found that domestic studies on
English vocabulary learning strategies employed by junior high school students,
especially metacognitive strategies employed by the rural junior high school students in
English vocabulary learning,are very rare.Therefore,the author made research in this
field.
In order to learn the employment of metacognitive strategies by the rural junior high
school students in English vocabulary learning,the author surveyed 322 students and 1 4
English teachers in 7 rural junior high schools in Xuchang,Henan Province.By means of
questionnaire,interview and test,the author intended to discuss 3 questions:1)What is the
overall situation of the rural junior high school students’using of metacognitive strategies?
21 Are there any differences of using metacognitive strategies in English vocabulary
learning between high-score and low-score students?3)Are there any differences of using
metacognitive strategies in English vocabulary learning between male and female
students?
The results of the research indicated that:1)All metacognitive strategies illustrated
in the questionnake have been employed by the rural junior high school students,but the
frequency is not high.Among the four metacognitive strategies,the frequency of selective
attention strategies is the highest,whi
