Map Projections Think of all the maps you’ve seen in your life. What are their purposes and uses? How would life be different if there were no such thing as maps? What would it be like if no one knew the “lay of the land?” What are some of the ways in which you and people you know have used maps? Many people rely on maps to do their jobs. For example, biologists need to know where plants and animals live, and ship captains and airplane pilots need to chart their routes. Generals use maps to plan wars, and diplomats use maps to plan peace. Can you think of other examples of people who use maps in their work? What are some of the more unusual maps you have seen? Have you ever seen a builder’s blueprint? Do you think a blueprint is a map? Why or why not? Have you ever seen an MRI map of a brain? When scientists use MRIs to view the brain, they call it “brain mapping”? Do you think an MRI image is a map? Why or why not? This presentation is going to ask you to think about what maps are, and how maps are used. It will introduce you to some basic map skills—or remind you of basic map skills you learned when you were younger—and try to help you develop a deeper, more sophisticated understanding of those map skills.
