Nates Bike Ride by Geri Murray Lets take a hike or ride bikes, Tim said to Nate. “Hikes tire me,” said Nate as he sat by the T.V., and I hate to ride my bike. I cant sit like you all day, Tim said, and off he ran to get his bike. Nates snake, Jake, needed a snack, but Nate did not get up to feed Jake his mice. He just sat. Nate had a nap, while Tim biked with Jan. Nate needs help, Tim said to Jan. He will whine if you ask him to hike. You have to trick him to get him to play. Lets think of a way, said Jan. Then Tim made a plan. I think I can get Nate to ride with us. I will get my kite and I will let him ride my new bike. He will like to glide on the drive and make the kite rise in the sky. Then he will not want to stay in and sleep all the time. Tim and Jan got the bike and the kite. Lets go in and get Nate. We can not tell him why, said Jan. Nate waked from his nap when Tim said, “Nate, you have to see this, quick! Nate was tired, but he got up to see what Tim had. Oh, no, he said. I think Ill go back in. I dont ride bikes.” Tim got on the bike. See, Nate, let it glide. The kite line slides in your hand as you ride the drive. The kite will rise. You will be fine. Please, Nate, just try. Jan and Tim were surprised when Nate got on the bike. Nate started to glide with one hand on the line. Yikes! This is nice! Nate slid down the drive. But he didnt stop. He kept on riding the bike. The kite kept on rising. Tim jumped on his bike to chase Nate. This is great! Ben yelled. Nate may not want to hike but now we can ride bikes. Tim met Nate on the bike trail. Nate was smiling. “That was a wild ride. I liked it! Lets keep riding,” said Nate. “The kite must be a mile up in the sky.” “I can not get it to rise like that,” said Tim. “Say Nate, do you like to camp?” “Yes, if we can bring the T.V. in the tent,” Nate said with a grin.
