METHODS: A total of 48 patients with esophageal carcinoma were assigned to 2 groups: a control group (n = 24) that received esophagectomy without chemotherapy and a preoperative chemotherapy group that received preoperative chemotherapy before esophagectomy (n = 24). All the patients were followed up for 40 months. Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of p27 and Ki67 in the 48 cases. RESULTS: We found that the expression of p27 in esophageal tumor was associated with the histology grade of tumor (χ 2 = 4.021, P = 0.045), but not with carcinoma invasion degree (χ 2 = 0.062, P = 0.961), lymph node metastasis (χ 2 = 0.006 , P = 0.936) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (χ 2 = 0.035, P = 0.551). The expression of Ki67 was associated with the invasion degree (χ 2 = 4.48, P = 0.034) and lymph node metastasis (χ 2 = 4.002, P = 0.045) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (χ 2 = 5.371, P = 0.02), but not with differentiation (χ 2 = 0.488, P = 0.4851). The median survival time was prolonged to 17 months in those who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, but compared with the 14 months for those not receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy there was no statistical significance (P
