Validationofbody-massrelationshipsrequiresacarefulstatisticalanalysisofdataofnormalweightindividuals.BMI(ratiobetween bodymassandsquareofbodyheight)andBSIvalues(ratiobetweenmassandcubeofbodyheight)havebeencalculatedfor99 personswithagesbetween1dayand76years.TheseBMIorBSIvalueshavebeenusedforleastsquares?tsyieldingmeanBMIor BSIvalues,theirvariances(providingprecision),andaveragedeviationsofindividualBMI/BSIvaluesfromtheBMI/BSImeans. Thelatterallowslimitstoover-andunderweight.ForadultswefoundmeanvaluesofBSIof12.36andcon?rmed21.7forthe meanBMI;buttheBSIwas1.4timesmoreprecisethantheBMI.Forchildrenshorterthan1.3mandyoungerthan8yearswe foundtheBMIaverageof15.9andover-/underweightlimitsof17.4/14.4beingsigni?cantlysmallerthanandincompatiblewith therecommendedBMIvalues. 1.Introduction a human body.
