Thecontributionsinthispaperareintwofolds.Ontheonehand,weproposeageneralapproachforapproximatingideal?lters basedonfractionalcalculusfromthepointofviewofsystemsoffractionalorder.Ontheotherhand,wesuggestthatthePaley andWienercriterionmightnotbeanecessaryconditionfordesigningphysicallyrealizableideal?lters.Asanapplicationofthe presentapproach,weshowacaseindesigningideal?ltersforsuppressing50-Hzinterferenceinelectrocardiogram(ECG)signals. 1.Introduction Anobviousadvantageofthepresentapproachisthatthe abovealwaysholdsnomatterwhattheconcretestructureof H(ω) is. However, theoretically speaking, Hr(ω) has to be explainedfromthepointofviewoffractionalcalculus. Filters have wide applications in various ?elds, ranging frommedicalengineeringtoelectricalengineering;see,for example,Hussainetal.[1],Bhattacharyyaetal.[2],Fieguth [3], Bendat and Piersol [4], Gray and Davisson [5], and Li [6], just mentioning a few. In the ?eld, the theory and techniquestoapproximateideal?ltersaredesired.Thereare somemethodsaboutapproximatingideal?lters,suchasBut- terworth?lters,Chebyshev?lters,Cauer-Chebyshev?lters, andBesselones(Wanhammar[7],MitraandKaiser[8]).
