The present study was undertaken to characterize the e?ects of Danggui-Shaoyao-San (DSS), a famous traditional Chinese medicineformulaconsistingofsixherbalmedicines,ondiabeticnephropathy.Streptozotocin-induceddiabeticratswereorally administratedDSS(2.8gkg?1perday)for12consecutiveweeks.DSSpartiallydecreasedthehighplasmaglucoselevelindiabetic rats. Diabetic-dependent alterations in urinary albumin, 24-hour urinary albumin excretion rate, and creatinine clearance as wellasthekidneyhypertrophy(kidneyweight/bodyweightratio)andglomerularmesangialmatrixexpansionwereameliorated after12weeksofDSStreatment.Theincreasedexpressionofnuclearfactor-κBaswellastransforminggrowthfactor-β1andthe progressiveaccumulationoftypeIVcollageninkidneyofdiabeticratswerealsoattenuatedbyDSS.Notonlytheelevatedlevelsof advancedglycationendproducts(AGEs)andN -(carboxymethyl)lysinebutalsothehigherlevelsoflipidperoxidationprod
