Exposuretomercuryisnormallyassessedbymeasuringitsaccumulationinhair,bloodorurine.Currently,thebiomarkersof e?ectthathavebeenproposedformercurials,suchascoproporphyrinesoroxidativestressmarkers,arenotsensitiveenoughand lackspeci?city.Seleniumandselenoproteinsareimportanttargetsformercuryandthioredoxinreductase(TrxR)inparticular wasshowntobeverysensitivetomercurycompoundsbothinvitroandinvivo.Inthisstudywelookedintotherelationbetween theinhibitionofthioredoxinreductase(TrxR)activityandhistopathologicalchangescausedbyexposuretomercurials.Juvenile zeabra-seabreamswereexposedtoHg aswellasTrxRactivity.Bothmercurialscausedhistopathologicalchangesinliverandkidney,albeitHg andseverelesions.Likewise,bothmercurialsdecreasedTrxRactivity,beingHg astrongerinhibitor.Co-exposuretoHg 2+ orMeHgfor28daysandhistopathologicalchangesw
