Itisunclearifadecreaseincancellousbonedensityorcorticalbonethicknessisrelatedtosacralinsu?ciencyfractures.We hypothesizedthatreductioninoverallbonedensityleadstolocalreductionsinbonedensityandcorticalthicknessincadaveric sacrathatmatchclinicallyobservedfracturepatternsinpatientswithsacralinsu?ciencyfractures.Weusedquantitativecomputed tomography to measure cancellous density and cortical thickness in multiple areas of normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic sacra.Cancellousbonedensitywassigni?cantlylowerinosteoporoticspecimensinthecentralandanteriorregionsofthesacral ala compared with other regions of these specimens.
