Theevolutionofsexremainsahotlydebatedtopicinevolutionarybiology.Inparticular,studyingtheoriginsofthemolecular mechanismsunderlyingsexualreproductionandgametogenesis(itsfundamentalcomponent)inmulticellulareukaryoteshas beendi?cultduetotherapiddivergenceofmanyreproductiveproteins,pleiotropy,andbythefactthatonlyaverysmallnumber ofreproductiveproteinsspeci?callyinvolvedinreproductionareconservedacrosslineages.Consequently,duringthelastdecade, manye?ortshavebeenputintoansweringthefollowingquestion:didgametogenesisevolveindependentlyindi?erentanimal lineagesordoesitshareacommonevolutionaryorigininasingleancestralprototype?Amongthevariousapproachescarriedout inordertosolvethisquestion,thecharacterizationoftheevolutionoftheDAZgenefamilyholdsmuchpromisebecausethese genesencodereproductiveproteinsthatareconservedacrossawiderangeofanimalphyla.Withinthisfamily,BOULEisofspecial interestbecauseitrepresentsthemostancestralmemberofthisgenefamily(the“grandfather”ofDAZ).Furthermore,BOULE hasattractedmostoftheattentionsinceitrepresentsanancientmalegametogenicfactorwithanessentialreproduc
