We study upper and lower bounds for estimating the e?ective behavior described by homogenizing a problem which is a generalization of the Reynoldequation. Allcaseswhenthesebounds coincidearealsofound. 1. Introduction Weconsideranequationoftheform (1) ? x,xε ?uε ?x1 x ε ? a2 x,xε ?uε ?x2 ?b2 x,xε a ?b1 x, + =f(x), 1 ?x1 ?x2 x ∈ Ω ? R2, uε ∈ H01(Ω). Here, ai and bi are assumed to be piecewise continuous in the ?rst variable and measurable and periodic relative to a cell Y =[0,1]2 in the second variable. In addition, we assume that there existconstants k? and k+ suchthat 0k?≤ai(x,y)≤k+∞ and |bi(x,y)|≤k+ 134 HomogenizedgeneralizedReynoldsequation forall x and y. Moreover, ε0 isasmallparameter. Many important physical problems can be described by a partial di?erential equation of the type (1). The standard example is stationary heatconductioninwhich bi=0. Anotherexampleconcerns?owbehavior between two surfaces in relative motion in the theory of lubrication for thin ?lms for which f(x)=0 and cib3(x,y)=ai(x,y)=a(x,y) for some i constant ci whichis propositional tothe relativemotion. Forthatspecial case(1)istheincompressibleReynoldsequation. Forsimplicityweput f =0. Thecorresponding weakformulationtakes theform: Find uε∈H01(Ω) suchthat (2) x,x ?uε 1 ?b1 x,xε ?v + 1 x,x ?uε ?b2 x,xε ?v dx=0 a a 1 2 ε ?x ?x ε ?x2 ?x 2 Ω for all v ∈ H1(Ω). The equivalent variational formulation is then: Find 0 u ∈H1(Ω) suchthat ε 0 Fε(Duε )= min Fε(Dv), 1 v∈H (Ω) 0 where and Fε(Dv )= fε(x,Dv)dx, Ω 2 1 fε(x
