Nautaetal.BMCPsychiatry2012,12:31 /1471-244X/12/31 STUDY PROTOCOL OpenAccess Preventingmoodandanxietydisordersinyouth: amulti-centreRCTinthehighriskoffspringof depressedandanxiouspatients MaaikeHNauta1*,HelmaFesten1,CatrienGReichart2,WillemANolen3,ADennisStant4,ClaudiLHBockting1, NicJAvanderWee5,AartjanBeekman6,TheoAHDoreleijers7,CatharinaAHartman3,PeterJdeJong1and SyboltOdeVries3,8 Abstract Background:Anxietyandmooddisordersarehighlyprevalentandposeahugeburdenonpatients.Theiroffspring isatincreasedriskofdevelopingthesedisordersaswell,indicatingaclearneedforpreventionofpsychopathology inthisgroup.Givenhighcomorbidityandnon-specificityofintergenerationaltransmissionofdisorders,prevention programsshouldtargetbothanxietyanddepression.Further,whiletheindicationforpreventiveinterventionsis oftenelevatedsymptoms,offspringwithotherhighriskprofilesmayalsobenefitfromresilience-basedprevention programs. Method/design:ThecurrentSTERK-study(ScreeningandTraining:EnhancingResilienceinKids)isarandomized controlledclinicaltrialcombiningselectedandindicatedprevention:itistargetedatbothhighriskindividuals withoutsymptomsandatthosewithsubsyndromalsymptoms.Individualswithoutsymptomsmeettwoofthree criteriaoftheHighRiskIndex(HRI;femalegender,bothparentsaffected,historyofaparentalsuicide(attempt).This indexwasdevelopedinanearlierstudyandcorrespondswithelevatedriskinoffspringofdepressedpatients. Childrenaged8–17years(n=204)withsubthresholdsymptomsormeetingthecriteriaontheHRIarerandomised tooneoftwotreatmentconditions,namely(a)10weeklyindividualchildCBTsessionsand2parentsessionsor(b) minimalinformation.Assessmentsareheldatpre-test,post-testandat12and24monthsfollow-up.Primary outcomeisthetimetoonsetofamoodoranxietydisorderintheoffspring.Secondaryoutcomemeasuresinclude numberofdayswithdepressionoranxiety,childandparentsymptomlevels,qualityoflife,andcost-effectiveness. Basedonmodelsofaetiologyofmoodandanxietydisordersaswellasmechanismsofchangeduring interventions,weselectedpotentialmediators
