Schreuderetal.HarmReductionJournal2010,7:25 /content/7/1/25 BRIEF REPORT OpenAccess SeroprevalenceofHIV,hepatitisb,andhepatitis camongopioiddrugusersonmethadone treatmentinthenetherlands ImkeSchreuder1,2*,MarianneABvanderSande2,6,MattydeWit3,MoniqueBongaerts4,CharlesABBoucher1, EstherACroes5,MaaikeGvanVeen2 Abstract Background:Injectingdrugusers(IDU)remainanimportantpopulationatriskforblood-borneinfectionssuchas humanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV),hepatitisBvirus(HBV)andhepatitisCvirus(HCV).IntheNetherlands,a programisbeingimplementedtoofferannualvoluntaryscreeningfortheseinfectionstoopioiddrugusers (ODUs)screenedinmethadonecare.Attwocaresiteswheretheprogramisnowoperating,ourstudyaimedto estimatetheseroprevalenceamongODUsscreenedforHIV,HBVandHCV;toevaluateHBVvaccinationcoverage; andtoassessthefeasibilityofmonitoringseroprevalencetrendsbyusingroutineannualscreeningdata. Methods:Opioiddrugusersonmethadonetreatmentareroutinelyofferedvoluntaryscreeningforinfectious diseasessuchasHIV,HBVandHCV.Dataonuptakeandoutcomeofanti-HIV,anti-HBc,andanti-HCVscreening amongODUsreceivingmethadonewereobtainedfromtworegions:Amsterdamfrom2004to2008andHeerlen from2003to2009. Findings:AnnualscreeninguptakeforHIV,HBVandHCVvariedfrom34to69%,dependingondiseaseand screeningsite.Ofusersscreened,2.5%wereHIV-positiveinAmsterdamand11%inHeerlen;26%wereHCV- positiveinAmsterdamand61%inHeerlen.OfthosescreenedforHBV,evidenceofcurrentorpreviousinfection (anti-HBc)wasfoundamong33%inAmsterdamand48%inHeerlen.InAmsterdam,92%werefullyvaccinatedfor HBVversus45%inHeerlen. Conclusion:AnnualscreeningforinfectiousdiseasesinallODUsinmethadonecareisnotfullyimplementedin theNetherlands.Onaverage,morethanhalfoftheODUsinmethadonecareinHeerlenandAmsterdamwere screenedforHIV,HBVandHCV.Inaddition,screeningdataindicatethatHBVvaccinationuptakewasratherhigh. WhiletheHIVprevalenceamongtheseODUswasrelativelylowcomparedtootherdrug-usingpopulations,the highHCVprevalenceamongthisgroupunderscorestheneedtoexpandannualscreeningandint
