Kempleretal.BMCPregnancyandChildbirth2012,12:155 /1471-2393/12/155 STUDY PROTOCOL OpenAccess Sleepeducationduringpregnancyfornew mothers LioraKempler1,2*,LouiseSharpe2andDelwynBartlett1,3 Abstract Background:Thereisahighassociationbetweendisturbed(poorquality)sleepanddepression,whichhasleadto aconsensusthatthereisabidirectionalrelationshipbetweensleepandmood.Onetimeinawoman’slifewhen sleepiscommonlydisturbedisduringpregnancyandfollowingchildbirth.Ithasbeensuggestedthatsleep disturbanceisanotherfactorthatmaycontributetothepropensityforwomentobecomedepressedinthe postpartumperiodcomparedtootherperiodsintheirlife.PostNatalDepression(PND)iscommon(15.5%)and associatedwithsleepdisturbance,however,nostudieshaveattemptedtoprovideasleep-focusedinterventionto pregnantwomenandassesswhetherthiscanimprovesleep,andconsequentlymaternalmoodpost-partum.The primaryaimofthisresearchistodeterminetheefficacyofabriefpsychoeducationalsleepinterventioncompared withacontrolgrouptoimprovesleepmanagement,withaviewtoreducedepressivesymptomsinfirsttime mothers. Method:Thisrandomisedcontrolledtrialwillrecruit214firsttimemothersduringthelasttrimesteroftheir pregnancy.Participantswillberandomisedtoreceiveeitherasetofbooklets(controlgroup)ora3hour psychoeducationalinterventionthatfocusesonsleep.Theprimaryoutcomesofthisstudyaresleep-related,thatis sleepqualityandsleepinessfortenmonthsfollowingthebirthofthebaby.Thesecondaryoutcomeisdepressive symptoms.Itishypothesisedthatparticipantsintheinterventiongroupwillhavebettersleepqualityand sleepinessinthepostpartumperiodthanwomeninthecontrolcondition.Further,wepredictthatwomenwho receivethesleepinterventionwillhavelowerdepressionscorespostpartumcomparedwiththecontrolgroup. Discussion:Thisstudyaimstoprovideaninterventionthatwillimprovematernalsleepinthepostpartumperiod.
