Methods:Forthispurpose,PSGrecordings(ECGincluded)wereobtainedduringthe night’ssleep(meanduration7hours)of17subjects(5men)withagesbetween26 and67.Basedontheserecordings,sleepexpertsperformedsleepscoringforeach subject.Thisstudyconsistedofthefollowingsteps:(1)VisualinspectionofECGdata correspondingtoeach30-secondepoch,andselectionofepochswithrelatively cleansignals,(2)beat-to-beatinterval(RRinterval)computationusinganR-peak detectionalgorithm,(3)featureextractionfromRRintervalvalues,and(4) classificationofsleepstages(orobstructiveapneaicperiods)usingone-versus-rest approach.Thefeaturesusedinthestudywerethemedianvalue,thedifference betweenthe75and25percentilevalues,andmeanabsolutedeviationsoftheRR intervalscomputedforeachepoch.Thek-nearest-neighbor(kNN),quadratic discriminantanalysis(QDA),andsupportvectormachines(SVM)methodswereused astheclassificationtools.Inthetestingprocedure10-foldcross-validationwas employed. Results:QDAandSVMperformedsimilarlywellandsignificantlybetterthankNNfor bothsleepstageandapneaicepochclassificationstudies.Theclassificationaccuracy rateswerebetween80and90%forthestage
