Our data show that a majority of persisters to ciprofloxacin were formeduponexposuretotheantibiotic,inamannerdependentontheSOSgenenetwork.Thesefindingsrevealanactive and inducible mechanism of persister formation mediated by the SOS response, challenging the prevailing view that persistersarepre-existingandformedpurelybystochasticmeans.SOS-inducedpersistenceisanovelmechanismbywhich cellscancounteractDNAdamageandpromotesurvivaltofluoroquinolones.Thisuniquesurvivalmechanismmaybean importantfactorinfluencingtheoutcomeofantibiotictherapyinvivo.
