Methods:ThisdescriptiveepidemiologicalstudyincludedalllivebirthsinChile,bothsingletonandmultiple,from 1991through2008.Trendsingestationalageaffectedtherateofprevalence(%)ofpretermbirths(37weeks, includingthecategories32and32–36weeks),termbirths(37–41)andposttermbirths(42weeksormore). Trendsinbirthweightaffectedtheprevalenceofbirths1500g,1500–2499g,2500–3999g,and4000gormore. Results:Datafromanexhaustiveregisteroflivebirthsshowedthatthenumberoftermandposttermbirths decreasedandthenumberofmultiplebirthsincreasedsignificantly.Birthweightsexceeding4000gdidnotvary. Totalpretermbirthsrosefrom5.0%to6.6%,withincreasesof28%forthesingletonsand31%formultiplebirths (pfortrend0.0001).Somecategoriesincreasedevenmore:specificallypretermbirth32weeksincreased32.3% forsingletonsand50.6%formultiplebirths(pfortrend0.0001). Theoverallrateoflowbirthweightinfants(2500g)increasedfrom4.6%to5.3%.Thisvariationwasnot statisticallysignificantforsingletons(pfortrend=0.06),butspecificanalysesexhibitedanimportantincreaseinthe categoryweighing1500g(42%)similartothatobservedinmultiplebirths(43%). Conclusions:Thegestationalageandbirthweightoflivebornchildhavesignificantlychangedoverthepasttwo decadesinChile.Monitoringonlyoverallratesofpretermbirthsandlow-birth-weightcouldproviderestricted informationofthisimportantproblemtopublichealth.Monitoringthembyspecificcategoriesprovidesasolid basisforplanninginterventionstoreduceadverseperinataloutcomes.
