万方数据万方数据A STUDY OF IDIOMS TRANSLATION IN FORTRESS BESIEGED FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF HERMENEUTIC MOTIONABSTRACTThis thesis is the study of idioms translation in Fortress Besieged from the perspective of Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion.Idioms are the legacies of Chinese historical culture. Having abundant cultural connotations, these idioms have their own characteristics in various Chinese language forms. They are widely acknowledged for the meanings implied in their terse and fixed forms, which, however, also add difficulties to idioms translation and become a challenge for translators. Wei Cheng is an excellent work which cannot be ignored in the history of modern Chinese literature. What’s more, the effects idioms have on Wei Cheng cannot be neglected. These idioms reflect the humorous writing style, enrich the expressions of language and add comic effect and readability to the language.The translation of idioms in Fortress Besieged serves as the corpus of this study. Employing the Hermeneutic Motion, the author discusses the rationality of the ways to translate corresponding idioms in the corpus. Specifically, in the theoretical framework of trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation, the analysis is about the comparisons between the meanings of some representative idioms in source language and target language, the comparisons between them, and the total data. In this way, explanations are given about the rationality of the choice of the ways to translate idioms. Trust is well shown by the translators’ selection of Wei Cheng. Aggression is used to analyze idioms translation from two aspects which are caused by theItranslators’ cultural consciousness and their different understandings. Incorporation is employed to analyze the ways to translate idioms from the aspects of meaning and form. The last is compensation which is achieved through annotation and amplification to give further explanations to idioms translation. Through the analysis and judgment
