Pedagogicalimplications…………………………………………………….45Limitationsandfurtherstudy…………………………….………………….46References………………………………………………………………………...…49Appendix………………………………………………………………………...51Acknowledgements………………………………………………………………….54AbstractJapaneseonomatopoeiaisverydifficulttobememorizedandmasteredbecausetheyhavevariousformsandmultiplymeaningsandfewkanjiwrittentokens.Thisstudyattemptstoanalyzeandfindoutthesolutionsfortheirmemorizingandlearningdifficulties.Thenusingthe“sound-symbolism”meaningbyJapanesefamouslinguistsKindaitiHaruhikoguidesstudentstomemorizeandmasterJapaneseonomatopoeiaandmimeticwords.Through30days’teachingexperiment,thisstudyattemptstoinvestigatetheteachingeffectofsoundsymbolismteachingmethodonthesetypesofJapaneseonomatopoeia:thevoicedandvoicelessonomatopoeia,onomatopoeiaintheformofchockedsound,syllabicnasalandRsound,onomatopoeiaofreiterativelocution,andexaminehowwellthestudentsmasteredthesetypesofonomatopoeia.Thesubjectsofthisstudyare40sophomoreofJapanesemajorfromNanchangUniversity.Alltheitemsofthetwosetsoftestpaperarechosenfromtheauthoritativedictionaries:JapaneseOnomatopoeiaDictionarybyAsanoTuruko(1978)andJapaneseOnomatopoeiaAdverbDictionarybyJinMuzhen(2007).Thetwotestshavesimilardifficultyandthesametestingpattern.AllthedatacollectedwasanalyzedbySPSS17.0,includingdescriptivestatistics,pairedsamplet-testsandsoon.Themajorfindingsaresummarizedasfollows:Firstly,thesymbolicmeaningsofprefixconsonantsusedinJapaneseonomatopoeiateachinghavereceivedagoodeffectwhichstudentsmadeagreatprogressandimprovedthescores.Mostofstudentscantakeadvantageofthesymbolicmeaningsofeightprefixconsonantstomemorizeonomatopoeiaandmimeticwordsbuttheyarepoorindiscriminatingthesynonymsofonomatopoeiaandtheonomatopoeiawiththesameprefixconsonants.Secondly,amajorityofstudentscanidentifythemeaningsofvoicedandvoicelessonomatopoeiaandmimeticwordswhentheconceptthatthesymbolicmeaningsofthevoicedandvoicelesssoundswiththesameetymologyareoppositeandcontrastisbroughtinonomatopoeiateachingexperiment,butthest
