6 6 摘 要 任碧莲是美国新生代华裔作家的代表。她于上世纪 90 年代登上美国华裔文学 的历史舞台，其代表作有《典型的美国人》及《梦娜在希望之乡》。她的新作《爱 妻》代表着她写作事业的新阶段，该作从更广泛的意义上，进一步探讨了不同文化 背景的人们如何在全球化时代背景下共同相处的问题。本论文试图通过她的小说 《爱妻》,分析小说中不同族裔人群所面临的身份危机及他们之间的身份协商。 该论文首先对作家及其相关作品进行了简要的介绍，并阐述美国华裔作家就华 裔身份问题在美国华裔历史上所进行的探索，进而说明任碧莲在华裔的身份问题上 持反本质主义立场，她反对用肤色、血缘将人的身份固定化，而是一再地在其作品 中表现人物身份的流变性。这与后殖民主义的身份观不谋而合。在论文的第四部分， 主要以霍米巴巴的文化混杂理论为支撑，着重分析了小说中具有异质文化背景的主 人公如何在追求单一文化身份的努力中，由相互摩擦走向相互影响。在此基础上得 出结论：身份是一个协商、不断变化的过程。不同文化身份的人们之间，冲突在所 难免，但文化协商又使他们在这个多族裔家庭中实现相互共存。 关键词：任碧莲；《爱妻》；身份；协商；混杂；差异；冲突 5 5 Abstract Gish Jen is a representative of the new generation of Chinese American writers. She boarded the stage of Chinese American literature in the 1990s with her two novels, namely Typical American and Mona in the Promised Land. Her latest work The Love Wife represents the new development of her writing career, in which she focuses more on how the people with different cultural backgrounds coexist in the time of globalization in a more general sense. This thesis intends to study The Love Wife by analyzing the identity crisis suffered by the characters of different ethnicities and the identity negotiation between them. After the introduction to Gish Jen and her major works, the thesis discusses the identity-seeking tradition in Chinese American literature in order to show Gish Jen’s anti-essentialism position in one’s identity. She objects to defining one’s identity by skin or blood, which coincides with the postcolonialism idea about one’s identity. Before getting into the major part, the thesis elaborates on Homi K. Bhabha’s cultural hybridity theory as the theoretical framework for the thesis. In chapter four, the thesis discusses in detail to show how the characters’ identities are influenced by each other and how they adapt their old identities to a changed environment when encountering in the Wong family, despite of their effort to keep a pure identity.
