I I Abstract Philip Roth (1933-) is one of the most influential and controversial American Jewish writers. He is the “Living Literary Legend” in American literary scene. His fiction is rich in themes such as assimilation, alienation and ethnic identity. He is bold in experimenting his narrative techniques which usually manifest the features of metafiction. This paper is going to study the identity theme of his novel Zukerman Unbound. Besides, by applying the theories of metafiction and intertextuality, it will also analyze the characteristics of metafiction and intertextuality in this novel and how these techniques affect the theme. This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction which makes a brief introduction on Roth and his Zukerman Unbound and reviews the researches that have been done on Roth and the book home and abroad. Chapter two studies the identity theme in this novel. Zukerman owns his identities as a writer, a husband and a son. However, with the publication of his Carnovsky, he gradually loses them which leads to his loss of self. Chapter three studies the characteristics of metafiction in the novel which is manifested in three aspects, namely, discussion on the creation of fiction in content, emphasis on the fictionality of novels and probing into the fictionality of the unwritten world. Then, it analyzes the effect of metafiction on the identity theme. Chapter four explores intertextuality in the novel, including intratextuality and intertextuality. It first analyzes the explanation function of the paratexts to the text, and then analyzes the internal textual relationship between Portnoy’s Complaint and Zukerman Unbound. Thirdly, it studies the intertexual relationship between Zukerman Unbound and Look Homeward, Angel and Prometheus Unbound. Lastly, it analyzes the effect of intertextuality on the identity theme. The last chapter is the conclusion of this paper. It points out that Roth has represented the identity crisis of
