We get the news through more than one medium: we may hear it on radio or watch it over television, we may read newspapers. Of course, there are differences in the character of news in newspapers and on radio and television. Radio broadcast may seem more succinct because listeners can’t absorb much detail in one time period. The main function of news discourse is to inform. Then, how can a news program arouse the interest of his listeners? How can newscasters improve their efficiency and productivity? Throughout the news program, they are only heard and not seen. What’s more, because of the rigid time limitations of radio news, they must find ways to reach radio listeners and make them listen. And news stories must quickly reveal their essence — the most important fact, the crucial element, the nature, and etc. And due to the time limitations, radio listeners can’t absorb much detail, so newscasters must find proper ways to tell news stories, looking for elements that will attract their listeners, and make them want to hear what they are going to say. In our daily life, while listening to some radio news reports, we are impressed by the feeling that some reports are more or less coherent. Because between different items of news there are often some transitional phrases helping listeners spontaneously establish some connections. As a result, listeners can have a clear idea about those news reports and then memorize them for a relatively long time. This is an interesting phenomenon. And it is a trend that such elements as cohesion and coherence are taken into account in radio news reports at present. When different pieces of news are connected, there comes a coherent text. Connectives are important to discourse comprehension because they tell the reader or the hearer how to conceptually link the conjoined clauses (Halliday Hasan, 1976).
