PAGE PAGE VI Abstract The Educational Reform at the Basic Level promotes the notion of education for all-around development, which stresses the cultivation of students’ scientific attainment, innovativeness and practical abilities. Biology practical ability occupies an important position in the teaching objectives of biology course for it constitutes the essence of scientific capacity. Thus two questions arise: what biology practical ability consists of, and how to cultivate students’ biology practical ability? Propelled by these questions, the thesis topic is meant to address the two questions. The research centres on the cultivation of middle school students’ biology practical ability, following the steps of posing, analyzing and solving questions. Surveys are made in order to make theoretical knowledge infused with practical explorations of cultivating students’ ability. And the thesis is laid out as the following: The first chapter is an introduction. This chapter introduces the background of the topic, a brief literature review, the research methods, as well as the significance and uniqueness of the research. Based on an abundance of material, the research has deeply explored the meaning of biology practical ability, shaping a theoretical framework for the research. The second chapter deals with a survey of middle school students’ biology ability. The survey is made through questionnaire, and the results show that the situation is undesirable. Students perform ill in aspects of experimenting, observing, collecting and handling biology information, expressing biology ideas and solving practical problems by using biological knowledge. The subjects are selected at random at six middle schools in Ganzhou City. The third chapter is an analysis of the main factors affecting middle school students’ biology practical ability. It combines the survey results and theoretical studying and analyzes the main factors affecting the cultivation and development of middle scho
