华 华 中 科 技 大 学 硕 士 学 位 论 文 I I Abstract With the development of cross-cultural communication and globalization, it is increasingly important to introduce traditional Chinese culture through translation to other countries. Newmark (2001) observed that during the cultural communication, “translation is one of the most important and economical methods”. However, traditional translation studies have always attached too much importance to linguistic analyses and textual comparisons when cultural factors were less concerned. As we all known, words are the most important elements in a language, and many of its words are embodied with rich cultural connotations of the language community. Therefore, culturally loaded words play a very significant role during communication among different cultures. Fortress Besieged written by Ch’ien Chung-shu, being the most outstanding academic and classical literary works with high value in translation researches is taken as the study subject, since there are a lot of culture-loaded words in it. In this paper, studies on how to deal with culture- loaded words in Chinese- English translation will be conducted within the theoretical framework of Peter Newmark’s translation theory to examine the situation of cross-cultural communication. Specifically, the idea of semantic and communicative translation strategies will shed a great light upon the analysis and discussion. Firstly, a review of studies on Peter Newmark’s translation theory, culture- loaded words translation and English version of Fortress Besieged will be made respectively. Secondly, the distribution of culture-loaded words in the original text of Fortress Besieged is examined and classified into five types based on Nida’s opinions when different translation of these Chinese culture-loaded words is demonstrated from the perspective of semantic and communicative translation strategy.
