Abstract Brownfield regeneration has been an important content of urban constructions in European and American cities in recent years. This paper firstly gives definitions to brownfield， concludes its characteristics，and analyses the causes of brownfield，the environmental， social and economic benefits ，and the broad prospects of brownfield regeneration. Secondly，it makes comparisons and distinctions between brownfield regeneration and other urban land reform strategies such as urban renewal and urban land relocation. Brownfield regeneration has evident predominance on sustainable development and urban land use recycling. Thirdly，tactics，policies and practices of brownfield regeneration in U. S，U. K. and other European countries are discussed，and the regeneration model and mechanism are concluded. governments and agencies in the US played very positive roles in making brownfield regeneration，and public and private sectors cooperation was also essential. British government policy strongly emphasizes the regeneration of brownfield as part of its sustainable development agenda. The Europe Commission promulgated policies to deal with soil contaminations，and its member states followed its guidance to redevelop brownfield. European governments take an active role in making plans, setting up agencies to deal with derelict properties and finance reuse projects. Moreover, the status of brownfield regeneration in theory and practice in China are discussed，and pointed out the main problems of brownfield regeneration in China. Based on the case studies, the idea of synthetic brownfield regeneration is presented, such as develop the modern industrial, rezoning as residential district, and transforming to public facilities and green space and so on..
