ABSTRACT The skill of printing patterns on cloth is a type of ancient, traditional folk craft. The printing technique, capable of generating rich patterns and abundant colors, has a unique and characteristic style in its arts. These printing patterns on the cloth are often used as the decorations of the cloth and some other kinds of living things. Developing a computational approach to designing printing patterns on computer, therefore, can not only help designers create the art works more easier but also have the potential to protect and inherit this traditional handicraft. Since the production methods of the printing patterns have some different ways, the final effects would be different. This thesis mainly studies two kinds of printing patterns techniques, the hand-painted printing technique and the printing patterns with the special batik cracks. This thesis presents a novel computational approach based on the main direction guided anisotropic diffusion model (MDGADM) to simulate the hand-painted printing patterns on cloth. Firstly, we use the grid model to model the cloth structure. Secondly, we input the contour image which can effectively limit the degree of the dye diffusion on the cloth. Then, considering both the anisotropic structure of the cloth and the influences from users’ strokes, we propose the main direction guided anisotropic diffusion model (MDGADM) to calculate the diffusion of the dyes in the cloth. Other interactions including the adsorption and evaporation are also incorporated to improve the accuracy and the realism. Lastly, we render the vivid hand-painted printing patterns on the cloth. Besides, according to the features of the batik cracks, we propose a physical method based on the extended finite element method and fracture mechanics to simulate the cracks on the printing patterns.
