On Translation of Sports Terms:From the Perspective of Relevance Theory Abstract 【ABSTRACT】 This research is carried out from the perspective of relevance theory，observing and analysing features of English sports terms, Chinese sports terms and their translation. Examples used are selected from specialized dictionaries and books. Research shows four features of English sports terms: frequent use of abbreviations，origin place oriented，appearance of punctuation marks and the different connotations behind the same meaning. Three features of Chinese sports terms are: vividness，culture-loaded words，distinctive ethnic features. It is proposed that sports terms translation is a dual ostensive-inferential process; translator is both the person specializing in target language and source language, and the person possessing rich knowledge of sports terms. Translator on the one side， infers the information of the original word with the help of contextual environment and his encyclopedic knowledge，and，on the other side, select symbols and marks that are in accordance with target language reader’s custom. Fidelity and criteria of translation from the perspective of relevance theory are also discussed，and some translations are not in accordance with readers’ recognition environment, where optimal relevance could not be realized. Translator should be more aware of readers’ recognition environment，has rich knowledge reserve of relevant theories，and use appropriate translation strategies to make translation achieve optimal relevance to their readers. 【KEYWORDS】 translation; sports terms; relevance theory 从关联理论看体育术语翻译 摘要 本研究从关联理论出发考察和分析r英汉体育术语及艽翻译的特征，主要从专门词典及著作 屮选取体竹术语屮右代表性的，有特点的例了?进行分析和比较。通过研究发现，英语体竹术语有 四个特点：使川缩略语、发源地导叫、使川标点符号以及同一释义下存在多种涵义；汉语体育术 语则形象生动，多文化负载词，有明显的国家比族特征。木研究认为，体竹术语翻译是种双明示 一交际的过程，译者一方面是双语人，一方面是体育人，译者一方面根据上下文语境、百科知识 等推断原词所ih传递的信息，一方而选择符合译入语的符号想读者进行明示。并结合关联理论就 典型翻译以及翻译的效度、翻译的标准进行讨论，认为部分词语在翻译时沖未能考虑读者所在的 语境，无法实现最佳关联。译者在翻译吋极更加关注读者的语境，广泛了解相关理论知识，综合 运用各种手段，使翻译对读者能够产生尽可能大的关联。
