The thesis attempts to analyze the differences between English and Chinese death euphemism and explore the deep cultural connotations under this language phenomenon. The purpose of acquaintance and familiarity with the cultural connotations of death euphemism is to make communication smoother. A good command of death euphemism will help people better understand the other sides culture. 　　Key words: death euphemism; culture; difference 　　A Contrastive Analysis of English Chinese Death Euphemism 　　Euphemism is a common and long-standing linguistic and cultural phenomenon in human language and society. The literal meaning of the word is to speak with good words or in a pleasant manner. Euphemism means many other ways which can also express tactfully through the following kinds of linguistic techniques: phonetic techniques; grammatical techniques or textual techniques in language system. 　　Death is the most terrible event to most human beings, which means the end of existence. As a consequence, it is a forbidden area in almost every culture. To avoid mentioning directly the word death，which probably will arouse unhappy feeling and frighten people，lots of euphemisms are created to substitute for it. This paper uses death euphemism to stand for this category of euphemism for convenience. 　　I.
