A b s tr a c t R ead in g has b een p lay ing an im p ortant p art in E nglish teaching and learn ing in m idd le sch o o l. Im p rov ing stu d ents reading ability is one of th e aim s in E ng lish teaching in senior high school. F rom cognitive perspective, reading strategies m ay b eg in as d eclarative know ledg e, an d then turn into procedu ral know ledg e w ith repeated practice.P rocedu ral k now ledge w ill benefit stu dents in im proving reading abilities o n ce they are turned to b e pro cedu ral read ing strateg ies. It com es to lig ht that stu dents shou ld learn and u se read ing strateg ies in ord er to im p rov e their reading ab ilities. In recent y ears, m any researches have v erified th at the proper intro du ctio n o f strateg ic k now ledg e and strateg ies trainin g for stu d ents is a k ey factor in im p roving the stu dents reading ability. So the training of reading strateg ies is set as o n e o f th e co re aim s in th e teach in g o f read in g . T his thesis m ainly inv estig ates the current situ ation of u sing E nglish reading strategies in senior G rade Tw o . Som e prob lem s are revealed by this research. T he teachers an d stu d ents p ay m o re attentio n to the teach in g an d learnin g o f lang u ag e w hile neglecting the reading strategies du e to the traditional teaching m ethods and theories.T h e frequ ency of u sing reading strategies in senior hig h school is not high and there are so m e differences betw een proficient stu dents and less proficient stu dents in the u se of reading strategies. T he teachers in stru ctio ns o f reading strategies are not enough and system ic. T he stu dents hope the teachers giv e m ore in stru ctio n s in read in g teaching . B esides,the teach ers and stu dents hav e som e w rong reading conception of E nglish reading .
