A A Report on the Translation of Life among the Chinese (Chapter 7—8)and Journeys in North China(Chapterl 9) Postgraduate：Li Cenpei Grade：20 1 4 Major Field of Study：MTI Supervisor：Professor Xie Shijian Orientation：English Translation Abstract Writings by missionaries sent to China ever since the 1 3th century have acquainted westerners州tlI China．Besides，they have served as the historical record of the economy， religion，society，and military affairs of China at that time．In the words of editors of A Collection of Old Foreign Writings on China,if translated properly，these works will promote academic studies in China and benefit a variety of scholars． These writings include a number of travel joumals，which are considered informative literary works where writers present true stories in a style more closely associated with fiction．The translated version should pay equal attention to its style while reproducing the contents．Translation under the guidance of Peter Newmark’S theory call achieve this end． Semantic translation enables readers to appreciate the sarne aesthetic value as that in the original text by reproducing the forms of the source language such as its syntax，wording and sound effects．Communicative translation can overcome difficulties caused bY different grammar rules，idiomatic expressions and cultural backgrounds between English and Chinese SO as to render the translated version more acceptable and appealing to its readers． The author of this report is one of the translators of the two travel joumals，namely， 三咖among the Chinese by R．S．Maclay，and Journeys in North China by Alexander Williamson．The author applies the method of case study in explaining where semantic and communicative translation should be used in rendering the excerpts into Chinese，and suggests that semantic translation is preferable when(1)the subtle meaning of the original language Can be expressed oI坶by a specific word in the target language，(2)the 万方数据 meaning mean
