南京航空航天大学硕士学位论文 南京航空航天大学硕士学位论文 The The Cognitive Model of Metaphors in Robert Frosts Poems PAGE PAGE 13 PAGE PAGE 10 Chapter One Introduction This study concerns the research on the cognitive model of metaphors in Robert Frost’s poems based on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT). It aims at finding a comprehensive metaphorical model in order to help the readers to understand Frosts poems more easily. This introduction covers four parts: background of the study, research goals, significance of the study, and organization of the thesis. Background of the Study In our daily life, metaphor has become a universal phenomenon. We use it anytime and anywhere. According to the research conducted by Chen Fei, the total number of metaphors we use is unbelievably 21 million in the whole lifetime (Chen Fei, 2007). Also the metaphorical inductive pattern is the basis of peoples cognitive activities and carries cognitive and heuristic functions. It is described as an important cognitive instrument to understand the ways that new thoughts and discourses are generated and structured. Therefore, the study of metaphor has widely aroused the interdisciplinary interests, such as researches conducted across linguistics, psychology, sociology and philosophy (Li Fuyin, 2000). Some linguists, philosophers and psychologists even think maybe all the words originate from metaphor. A lot of books, conferences, journals, as well as study groups have made great contribution to the development of metaphor. Metaphor is not considered a figure of speech, but also used to explore the mechanism and operation of human cognition through some relevant connections. After George Lackoff and Mark Johnsons masterpiece Metaphors We Live By was published in 1980, researchers began to treat metaphor as a thinking and cognitive tool immanent in human beings. This book demonstrates that the study of metaphor has turned to the cognitive realm. From then on, it has
