Gideon Mbiydzenyuy Netport Science Park AB Biblioteksgatan 4, 374 35 Karlshamn gideon.mbiydzenyuy@netport.se Abstract Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has renewed interest in horizontal collaboration among freight transport organizations aimed at achieving a reduction in transport inefficiencies. In this article, challenges associated to horizontal collaboration are identified alongside a number of recent application concepts based on Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). The article propose a model for minimizing the number of trips given an amount of loads that needs to be transported from an origin to a destination under a horizontal collaboration scenario. A number of technical, organizational, behavioural and business challenges related to horizontal collaboration are identified as well as C-ITS application concepts from different projects. Identified concepts suggest that efforts in the deployment of C-ITS to address challenges in horizontal collaboration turn to focus on the provision of technical functionalities. Preliminary indications from the load balancing model suggest a 12% reduction in vehicle volumes with horizontal collaborative.
