3. arouse the awareness of protecting Antarctica and the earth.

I. Leading in
Enjoy some pictures about Antarctica to relax the students and lead in.
T: What did you see in these pictures?
S: Penguins and iceberg.
T: What place will you think of when you see these things?
S: Antarctica.
T: What do you know about Antarctica?(The students give different answers.)
T: It’s one of the seven continents in the world. What else do you know about it? In order to know more about Antarctica, let’s sdudy a passage today. Please turn to page two and look at the title: Antarctica the Last Continent. This is our topic today.
II. Fast reading
1. Choose a heading for each paragraph. (90 seconds)
Para1 The land
Para2 Plants and animals
Para3 A great place for researchers
Para4 The discovery of Antarctica
Para5 The Antarctic Treaty
2. Look at the heading of the whole passage. Think of a question: What does “the Last Continent” mean?
It was the last continent to be discovered.
III. Careful reading
1. Some information about paragraph1.
Read paragraph1. Try to remember as much information as you can. Then answer some questions. (Two minutes)
(1) What’s the weather like in Antarctica?
(2) What’s the size of Antarctica?
(3) Decide where the sentence go in the first paragraph.
If the ice melted, the sea level would rise by about 60 metres.
