Polymers are made up of many many molecules all strung together to form really long chains (and sometimes more complicated structures, too). Note： polymer：n.聚合物，高聚物 molecule：n.分子 strung：string的过去分词，串起，连成一串， complicted:adj.结构复杂的 聚合物是由许多分子串联到一起形成相当长的链（有时具有相当复杂的结构） Poly- means many and -mer means part or segment. Mono means one. So, monomers are those bitty molecules that can join together to make a long polymer chain. segment：n. 部分；段；节 monomer：n.单体 bitty：adj.片段的；微小的 poly是“许多”的意思，mer是部分或片段的意思，mono的意思是“一个”，因此，单体是那些能够连接起来形成长高分子链的小分子。 monomer：ethylene 二、building your polyethylene Most of the polymers well talk about here are linear polymers. A linear polymer is made up of one molecule after another, hooked together in a long chain. This chain is called the backbone. Those single bonds between atoms in the backbone can swivel around a bit，like paper clips hooked together end-to-end. Note： straight：adj. 直的；坦率的；正直的 rigid:adj.坚硬的；严格的；刻板的 bond：n。化学键，结合 swivel:v.旋转； atom：n.原子 线性聚合物不一定是直线的。主链上化学键可以旋转一定角度，像一串回形针尾端相互勾连在一起。 To the rest of the world, linear means straight and not curved but for polymers, linear means not branched. 在其它地方线性的是指直的非曲线的，而对聚合物来说，线性的是指非支化的。 Then what is branchedpolymer? A BRANCHED polymer chain has extra beginnings (branches!) along the chain and so it has lots of ends.
