Oneoftheprimaryconsequencesofdigitaloverloadistheerosionoffocusedworkcapabilities.Theabilitytoconcentratedeeplyoncomplextaskshasbeenshowntodeclineinenvironmentswithconstantnotificationsandinterruptions.Multitasking,oftenglorifiedinthedigitalage,islargelyamyth;instead,frequentswitchingbetweentasksdiminishesproductivityandthequalityofwork.Professionalsfindthemselvesperpetuallydistracted,jumpingfromoneemailormessagetoanother,leavinglittleroomforthedeepthinkingrequiredforcreativeproblem-solvingorstrategicplanning.
Furthermore,thelinesbetweenworkandhomehavebecomeincreasinglyindistinct.Theabilitytoworkfromanywheremeansthattheofficeisnolongeraphysicalboundary.Employeesarenowexpectedtobeavailableatallhours,leadingtolongerworkinghoursandasensethatleisuretimeisconstantlybeingencroachedupon.Thisalways-onculturecontributessignificantlytomentalfatigueandcanstrainpersonalrelationships,asindividualsstruggletodisconnectandrechargeoutsideofwork.
