ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF2054;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

Scope

Thesetestmethodscovertheprocedurefordeterminingtheminimumburststrengthofasealplacedaroundtheperimeterofaflexiblepackageasitisinternallypressurizedandenclosedwithinrestrainingplates.

ThetestmethodsdescribedhereinarefunctionallysimilartoTestMethodsF1140withtheexceptionoftheuseofrestrainingplates.TestMethodsF1140describesmethodsofbursttestingthatdonotincludetheuseofrestrainingplatesandaresuitabletodetermineapackagesgeneralabilitytowithstandpressurizationstresses.UnderTestMethodsF1140thestressesarenotdistributeduniformlytoallareasofthepackageseal.Underunrestrainedconditionsthestressonthepackageishighestatthemiddleofthepouchwhereitinflatestothepackagesmaximumdiameter;therefore,TestMethodsF1140maynotreliablydetecttheweakestareaoftheseal.

Thebursttestinternallyandincreasinglypressurizesapackageuntilanareaofthepackagesealaroundtheperimeter“bursts”openinresponsetopressurization.Byplacingthepackagewithinrestrainingplatesduringpressurization,thedimensionalstabilityofthepackageismaintainedinamannerthatresultsinstressesappliedmoreuniformlyalongtheperimeterofthepackage,wheresealsarenormallyplaced.Thisallowsthetesttohaveahigherprobabilityofdetectingtheweakestareaofthesealandprovideameasurementofthepressurerequiredto“burst”openthepackag
