【标题】?《傲慢与偏见》的持续魅力 【作者】王高菊 【关键词】??英国文学??简﹒奥斯丁??傲慢与偏见 【指导老师】白 敏 【专业】英语教育 【正文】 1. Introduction Jane Austen is quite different from any novelist before her, and an important part of the difference is that for many years she was not consciously writing for publication. Her works were published anonymously when Gothicism, Sentimentalism and Romanticism dominated British literature. Though publishing anonymously prevented her from acquiring an authorial reputation, it also enabled her to preserve her privacy at a time when English society associated a female’s entrance into the public sphere with a reprehensible loss of femininity. Additionally, Austen may have sought anonymity because of the more general atmosphere of repression pervading her era. As the Napoleonic Wars?(1800-1815) threatened the safety of monarchies throughout Europe, government censorship of literature proliferated. Austen belonged to the nineteenth century, but in both moral outlook and prose style she was closer to the eighteenth century precedents than to her contemporaries. Her works show clearly her firm belief in the predominance of reason over passion, the value of ration and sense over that of Sentimental, Gothic and Romantic tendencies. A serious writer, she considers it her duty to express in her works a discriminated and serious criticism of life, and to expose the follies and illusions of mankind. She shows contemptuous feelings towards the silly, snobbish, stupid, worldly and vulgar people through subtle satire and irony. In her works, Pride and Prejudice is quite a representative that has the above qualities.????????? Though some critics accuse Austen of portraying a limited world, describing an ambiguity about emotion, Jane Austen’s works are well accepted in the world, and among them Pride and Prejudice is possibly one of the most splendid recreations of readers in all of literature. It is a book that is more than tale telling. It owes its greatness to the fact that it appeals
