IntroductionIt is well known to us English learners that English-Chinese translation is done in two steps: a correct comprehension of the source language text and a faithful and smooth reproduction of the original. In reality, because of cultural differences, misunderstandings may arise, although the language used in communication may be faultless. Sometimes even the same words or expressions may not mean the same thing to different people. Because of cultural differences, jokes by a foreign speaker may be received with blank faces and stony silence. However, the same stories in the speaker’ native place would leave his or her audiences holding their sides with laughter. Because of cultural differences, a serious question may cause amusement or laughter while a harmless statement may cause displeasure or anger. Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. Some people consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, they maintain, culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture. Language reflects culture. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises their historical and cultural backgrounds as well as their approach to life and their ways of living and thinking.1 We shall not go further into the relationship between language and culture. The common senses tell us that cultures differ from one another, that each culture is unique. As cultures are diverse, so languages are diverse. It is only natural then that with differences in cultures and differences in languages, difficulties often arise in communicating between cultures and across cultures. Culture is often compared to an iceberg to imply that only a small part of it is visible while most of it is not, and that understanding is not always easy.?Equivalence is a very important factor in translation.
