For example, a daily newspaper has ranged from about 20 pages to about 80 or 90 pages. And newspapers on Sundays sometimes include more than 200 pages. If readers want to find the information needed in a short period, they must both read fast and get the gist. When readers open a newspaper, the first thing that catches their eyes is the headline. It tries to tell the whole information in one sentence though it is incomplete. Thus, reading headline is a shortcut. Generally speaking, headlines attract the readers’ attention and interest; and it is the highlight of the reporting; what’s more, headlines are short as to fit the limited space in the page. Consequently, a headline writer uses very condensed structure and chooses words for their brevity and dramatic quality. Therefore, headlines may be difficult to read. No wonder some people often say that a native reader reads the headline to find out what the stories about, while a foreign reader has to read the whole story to understand the headline. So, in order to help readers catch the gist of English newspaper through headlines and get the twice the result with half the effort, I have collected quite a number of English newspaper headlines and classified their characteristic into groups. The followings are the typical features of headlines language I have analyzed: II. Lexical Features News headline require a high degree of brevity. Recent years, western journalists always use some new words, fashion words, abbreviation words, compound words, slang and idiom so as to make the news more attractive, interesting and impressible which leads to the special lexical preference.
