Function of the Introduction section
The function of the Introduction section of a research paper is to
(1) create reader interest by introducing in more detail some general background information on the topic under investigation,
(2) focus on an issue, a problem, or a question relevant to the study,
(3) review previous research,
(4) discuss deficiencies in previous research on the topic and,
(5) propose a ‘new/different’ way of investigating the same topic or some aspect of it.
In some studies, the information needed for section 3 and 4 above is placed in a separate section titled Background or Review of Literature.
Here, we include the background information and the literature review in the Introduction section.
I Introducing the topic
We can introduce the topic in different ways by making a statement, making a summary or a summarizing comments on other people’ s studies, quoting from someone well-known to our readers, or sometimes asking a question conerning the topic and so on.
All these should raise the interest of the reader in the topic.
Some examples from the Introduction sections of several papers.
Ex. 1. What happens in the language classroom is intimately linked to social and political forces in the world at large, and the practitioners must not only be aware but also understand these links if they are to be fully effective in their work.
Example 1 starts with a personal statement about the topic and then turns to what he will deal with in the second part of the sentence, in which the writer emphasizes that as teachers we should be aware of the relationships and understand them if we want to be successful in our teaching.
2. Research on learner beliefs in the last two decades has given us interesting insights into what language learners’ view are concerning the teaching and learning of a second or foreign language.
Example 2, on the other hand, gives a summary of the research on the views of language learners with
