Teaching Aims
Knowledge objective Students can learn basic information of the Modern Olympics and the Ancient Olympic Games and can find the differences. Students can understand the reading of the “interview”and improve their own reading ability. Students can get more familiar with new words of the unit, such as ancient, compete, take part in, Greece, athlete, medal, stand for, mascot, host, stadium, admit, olive, motto, swift.
Ability Objective Students can speak out basic facts of Ancient and Modern Olympic Games. Additionally, students can name out the sports in both Ancient and Modern Olympic Games.
Moral Objective After learning the history of the Ancient Olympic Games and the Modern Olympic games, students can have more passion on the Olympics and be more patriotic.
Teaching points Make students know the history of the Ancient Olympic Games and learn the difference between the Modern Olympic Games.
Teaching difficulties When talking about the history of the Ancient Olympic Games, the teacher needs to use a simplified way making the history understood.

Dividing the whole class into 2 groups for competition.
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1 Lead in
The teacher shows several pictures of current popular TV programs—“Splash” and “Star in Danger”. Introduce the sport in these shows is diving in English. There are many Olympic champions in these shows, such as Gao Min and Tian Liang.
Give a little background of Gao Min and Tian Liang. Show a video that Tian Liang got the champion in the Sydney Olympic Games of 2000.
Ask students what they felt after watching this video.
Step 2 Give the basic knowledge of the Beijing Olympic Games
The teacher shows several pictures of her volunteer period, catching students’ eyes. Introduce basic knowledge of the Beijing Olympic Games. Try to use the angle of the Beijing Olympic Games to let students know the general information of the Modern Olympic Games.
