The Technique of Amplification By amplification, we mean that in translation we sometimes have to amplify some necessary words or phrases so as to make the translation clear and smooth. Generally speaking, there are two cases where amplification is needed, one is to complement some implicit meaning by some words in order to transfer the original meaning explicitly; the other is to complement some sentential component omitted in the original discourse to make the translation have complete meaning. In order to faithfully convey the original meaning and style, and at the same time to make the translation conform to the linguistic and social norm and habit, we sometimes need to add some words and expressions in translation. We can add verbs, nouns, adverbs, attributes, pronouns, and conjunctions, and so on according to our needs. It is a very usual phenomenon for a translator to add conjunctions when translate Chinese into English, because conjunctions are used more often in English than in Chinese, and it is the same with articles. (汉语意合,英语形合) The cook turned pale, and asked the housemaid to shut the door, who asked Brittle,, who asked the tinker, who pretended not to hear.厨子的脸色变得苍白,要女仆把门关上,女仆叫布里特而关,布里特而叫补锅匠关,而补锅匠装着没听见。 Chinese emphasizes the notion of “governing form with spirit”, English emphasizes hypotaxis, whereas Chinese emphasizes parataxis. Hypotaxis means achieving the cohesion of words and sentences with language forms, parataxis means achieving the cohesion of words and sentences with the logical relation implied by them. The former focuses on cohesion in language form, and the latter focuses on coherence in meaning. When translating Chinese into English, pronouns are often amplified. Translate the following sentences into C: 1. Children, neglected by their parents, turned in some instances to drugs and crimes. 2.Before he went to Africa, he learned how to ride and shoot. 3. She had her hands full this morning—washing, cooking and cleaning. To add
