Water Quality as an Ecosystem Service Ecosystem services are values that humans ascribe to, and derive from ecosystems. In water quality management, ecosystem services are usually termed “beneficial uses.” There is a wide range of potential beneficial uses that might be supplied by a water body (e.g. drinking water, irrigation, swimming, recreation, industrial use, navigation). The original characteristics of the watershed and the landscape set the stage, controlling which of those uses any given water body could possibly provide. As we manage the landscape in different ways, we are making choices, choosing to preclude certain beneficial uses of the water in favor of others. For example, when we
