The G?ttingen Gutenberg Bible goes digital: Digitization of Cultural Heritage and History Primary Resources at G?ttingen State and University Library Norbert Lossau, Head of the Digitization Center (GDZ) at G?ttingen State and University Library, lossau@mail.sub.uni-goettingen.de http://www.gutenbergdigital.de http://www.sub.uni-goettingen/gdz Introduction Johannes Gutenberg, nominated as Man of the Millenium and known as the inventor of printing, printed his first book, the Gutenberg Bible around 1454. From the 180 printed copies today 49 complete and incomplete examples are known worldwide, including 12 bibles printed on vellum. G?ttingen State and University Library holds one of the few complete vellum copies of the Gutenberg Bible. The digitization of the G?ttingen Gutenberg Bible was an ambitious project for the library and started in Summer 1999. The success of the project based on the successful cooperation of different departments within in the library, namely the Department of Manuscripts and Early Imprints (Dr. Helmut Rohlfing), the Subject Librarian for Religion Studies (Dr. Armin Müller-Dreier) and the Digitization Center (Martin Liebetruth, Dr. Norbert Lossau). The G?ttingen Digitization Center The Digitization Centre (GDZ) of the G?ttingen State and University Library was established in 1997 and is acting - besides the Bavarian State Library in Munich - as national supply Centre for German libraries and academic institutions in the field of digitisation. Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) the GDZ is charged with co-ordinating national efforts towards standardisation and is engaged in testing and providing tools and techniques for image capture and text conversion, bibliographic description, document management, and the provision of online access to digital collections.
