The aim o f th is study w as to in ve stigate th e r ole of an ti-inflam matory cytokin es such as interleukin –4 (IL–4 ), interleukin –10 (IL–10 ), and tra nsfor ming gr ow th facto r-be ta (TGF-beta ). Serum leve ls of IL–4, IL–10 an d TGF-b were de termined in 45 p atie nts with SIRS: 38 patie nts had SIRS of infectious or igin , whereas seven patients had non-infectious SIRS. Twenty healthy subjects were used as controls. Serum le ve ls of IL–4, IL–10 an d TGF-b were deter- mined by an im mun oe nzy me as say. A signific an t incr ease of IL–4 w as observe d in these patie nts at the tim e of diagn osis and 5 day s later. In con tras t, s erum leve ls of IL–10 were not incr eas ed at the tim e of diagnosis, but a slight decrease was noted after 5 days. Serum levels of TGF-b were not increased at time of diagnosis, and a slight increase was observed after 5 days. Serum leve ls of IL–4 w ere signific antly high er in patie nts w ith in fectious SIRS a t th e tim e of dia gn os is, where as n o s ign ific an t dif ference be tween in fectious an d non-in fectious SIRS w as noted for serum leve ls of IL–10 an d TGF-b at th e tim e o f diagn osis a nd 5 days later.
