Received5September2008;Revised15December2008;Accepted12January2009 RecommendedbyYvetteMandi Plasmain?ammatorymarkershavebeenshowntobepredictorsforcardiovascularrisk,however,thereisnostudywherethelevels ofplasmacirculatorymarkershavebeenevaluatedincoronaryarterydiseasepatients(CADpts)positiveforC.pneumoniaeIgA andhighsensitiveC-reactiveprotein(hsCRP)whichmayhelpinbetterunderstandingofdiseasepathogenesis.Atotalof192 patientsand192controlsattendingtheCardiologyOutpatientDepartmentofSafdarjungHospitalwereenrolled.Thelevelsof plasmacirculatoryin?ammatorymarkerswereevaluatedbyELISA.Thelevelsofcirculatoryplasmamarkers(IL-4,IL-8,IL-13, ICAM-1,andVCAM-1)weresigni?cantlyhigher,whereas,levelsofIL-10andIFN-γweresigni?cantlylowerinCADptscompared tohealthycontrols.ThelevelsofIL-4,IL-8,andICAM-1(P =.007,.015,and.048)weresigni?cantlyhigher,however,IL-10and IFN-γweresigni?cantlylower(P.001,.001)inC.pneumoniaeIgApositiveCADpts.ThelevelsofIL-4,IL-8,IL-13,ICAM-1, andVCAM-1werehigherbutnotsigni?cantandlevelsofIL-10andIFN-γweresigni?cantly(P.001,.001)lowerinhsCRP positiveCADpts.Ourstudysuggestedthatcirculatorycytokines,namely,IL-4,IL-8,andadhesivemoleculeslikeICAM-1were enhancedafterinfectionwithC.pneumoniaewhereasincontrasttothisIL-10andIFN-λwerelowered.Suggestingtheimportant roleofthesecytokinesinprogressionofCAD.
